How to Make Your Own Authentic Masala Chai at Home?

Making masala chai at home is a delightful process that allows you to customize the blend of spices and adjust the sweetness according to your preferences.

Here's a basic recipe to guide you through making masala chai:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups water

  • 2 cups milk

  • 2 tablespoons loose black tea leaves (or 4 tea bags)

  • 2-3 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 4-6 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 4-6 whole cloves

  • 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, thinly sliced or grated

  • Optional: a pinch of black peppercorns, fennel seeds, or star anise for additional flavor

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil.

  2. Once the water is boiling, add the black tea leaves (or tea bags) along with the crushed cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, and sliced ginger.

  3. Reduce the heat to low and let the tea and spices simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.

  4. Add the milk to the saucepan and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally to prevent the milk from boiling over.

  5. Once the mixture comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low and let the chai simmer for another 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  6. Stir in the sugar and continue to simmer for another minute, or until the sugar has dissolved completely.

  7. Remove the saucepan from the heat and strain the masala chai using a fine mesh strainer into a teapot or directly into serving cups.

  8. Taste the chai and adjust the sweetness and spiciness according to your preference. You can add more sugar or spices if desired.

  9. Serve the masala chai hot and enjoy!

Feel free to experiment with the proportions and types of spices used to create your perfect blend of masala chai. Some people also like to add a dash of vanilla extract or a pinch of nutmeg for extra flavor. Enjoy the process of making and savoring this delicious and aromatic beverage!
